Welcome back to a new school year! It has been great getting to know some new faces and to see old faces return!

The focus of the week was on our routines and getting to know each other. The kids did a great job following our visual schedule, with verbal time warnings and timers set. We practiced lining up and crossing the street as a group, and how to set the table and clear it after eating. With that being said, those are only a sample sized amount of routines we go through in a day. The returnees have been wonderful helpers!

Our morning meeting routine involved us playing group games, following the actions to movement songs, reading storybooks, and working on activities to practice identifying and matching letters in our names. Some of the games we played were Simon Says, Freeze Dance (You freeze when the music stops.), and Through the Hoop (Without letting go of each other’s hands we had to get the hula hoop to go around the circle). These games are great for listening skills, communication skills, gross motor movement and teamwork. This week’s names activities included matching letters to their names using Velcro letters and corresponding clothespin letters, using a Bingo dapper to dot along the lines of their names, and using their little fingers to tear and glue paper on their letters. A couple of our favourite books read this week were Pete the Cat I Love My White Shoes by Eric Litwin and James Dean, and Brown Bear Brown Bear What Do You See? by Eric Carle.

Throughout the weeks our morning meeting routine may also involve the weather, counting days on the calendar, special leader activities, letter learning, fine motor activities, and theme learning. There is a lot to look forward to!

We also spent plenty of time outdoors. We are out now, while we are so fortunate to have nice weather! We went to multiple parks, took Bella dog through the field, climbed trees and kicked soccer balls around. The nice days offered us the opportunity to take some of our afternoon activities into the backyard as well. Our afternoon activities included baking, painting rocks, shaving cream + paint butterflies, and baking soda and vinegar experimenting.

What a rainy week it has been! Even if we couldn’t go play at the park, we still made the most of it and went puddle jumping. For multiple days everyone was wet from head to toe!

Believe it or not, we had just one day of nice weather so we took advantage of that and went on a park adventure and had a picnic.

We started our theme on farm animals this week. The kids brainstormed all of the animals they could think of that lived on a farm like pigs, cows and horses, and less normally thought of to be farm animals such as barn owls and mice. We had plenty of fun pretending to be farm animals and dancing/making noises to our farm animal songs. We worked together to figure out how we would make a life-size paper barn, glued the pieces together and though about how we would begin filling it with animals. We even decorated it with horseshoes for good luck!

Happy Father's Day! I hope all the Dads have a wonderful weekend with their little ones!

The kids have been working hard all week on their gifts for their Dads. They spent a morning collecting twigs from various parks for their photo frames and worked hard putting the twigs together on the cardboard frame. They were the cutest little posers for their photos are well! They also loved the idea of making a superhero card for Dad; we had Ninja Turtles, Spiderman, and Batman. They did a great job writing their names and adding little drawings/writings to their card. Needless to say, they worked hard and they are super proud of what they have created for you!

This week was all about reviewing shapes. We dancing and sang to shapes songs, build shapes with our bodies and play dough, went on 2D/3D shape hunts, made shape patterns and matching shapes.

We celebrated a very special 4th birthday! Baking is always super fun when there is a birthday involved!

We also had a bunch of fun building with play dough and legos, and outdoor time exploring, puddle jumping, worm finding, tree climbing, etc.

There was a lot of fun to be had this week. We were outdoors playing at the parks, in the dandelion fields, in the ravine and NoseHill Park. We took our arts and crafts outdoors as well (painting and beaded pipe cleaner worms)! The kids climbed dirt walls and large cement blocks, and jumped over the creek. Such fun gross motor activity! And we even saw Blue Jay birds.

Our theme this week was worms. We learned so much about worms! Earthworms can grow new tails but not new heads, they have no eyes or ears but can feel vibrations and can sense light. This is how birds can catch worms; by pecking at the ground to trick them into thinking underground predators are close by, so they will surface. If worms don’t have water/moisture they will not be able to breathe and will dry up. They do not drown. It is thought that they come up when it rains so they can migrate. We were surprised to learn that a worm is both a boy and a girl at the same time!

We made pipe cleaner worms in paper apples and homemade gummy worms. The best part of of the gummy worm process was squeezing them out of the straws and eating them of course!

Ribbit, Ribbit went the kids all week long!

What is a frog? Where do they live? What do they eat? We were surprised to learn that some frogs don’t even have a tongue to catch bugs and some only have small tongues. Big frogs can even eat mice or other frogs! We also learned that if their environment is not healthy some frogs will be born with extra toes or legs! We learned about Poison Dart frogs; their characteristics such as being tiny, being brightly coloured (blues/oranges/reds) and having spots were surprising to some. We learned the difference between a frog and a toad. Even though they are from the same family they do have different characteristics ie: dry, bumpy skin vs and smooth, wet skin. We even learned about the frog lifecycle. There are so many things to learn about frogs!

The kids practiced their lowercase letter matching and identification with a lowercase letter Frog and Log game. We also sang 5 Green and Speckled Frogs and had a number and dice rolling activity to go with it. We journaled about frogs and their lifecycle. and of course you can't forget our paper plate frog with a curly tongue!

We are oh so fortunate to be able to spend longer days outdoors; worm searching, dandelion picking and frolicking about the fields and playgrounds!

May 17th, 2019

Happy May long weekend. I hope everyone is out and about enjoying the weather!..Much like we did this past week. We went on two NoseHill Park adventures! One of them being all the way across to the other side! We saw a deer and learned about why deer show up in the Porcupine Valley area. We saw a few bees and talked about pollination. We found buds on the trees, and tried to figure out what type of birds were flying overhead. The kids buried some popcorn kernels they found; thinking a popcorn tree will grow. They also got to play in a mini forested area in the stick/branch teepees that others have made and had a picnic. The kids have been asking to make this journey for quite a few months now, so they were really excited that the weather was perfect to do so!

This week, other than our NoseHill Park adventures, we learned about fish; various types, where in the water certain types of fish live and how they ‘breathe’ under the water. We learned that Orcas and Dolphins are actually mammals and that led us to talk about what mammals are.

We made handprint fish puppets, folded and painted toilet tube fish, painted Blowfish with forks and made shape fish in journals. We also practiced our numbers 6-10, and played with Goldfish crackers and dice to represent and add numbers.

We practiced spelling, and tracing our names, as well as used pinecones.

Cinco de Mayo and Mother's Day

Happy Mother’s Day to all the women out there! The kids have been working really hard on their Mother’s Day crafts for the special mom’s in their lives. When asked what makes them love their mom so much, the responses were so sweet and some were even little bit funny. Oh kids! I hope all the moms have the most wonderful weekend with their little ones!

We also continued our celebration of Cinco de Mayo this week by making brightly coloured paper flowers and with the completion of our paper mache maracas. Everyone did a great job waiting patiently during drying days and working as a team to make them.

This week we moved our focus from letters to numbers. We practiced writing numbers on the board, identifying attributes that are special to the numbers one through five, representing numbers and doing basic addition. The group this year have all been doing really well identifying, writing and/or adding numbers together.

    What I love about teaching:

There are so many things that I love about teaching…where to start?!

There is always something special about being a child’s first experience with structured education. I like to see the light in a child’s eyes when something “clicks”, or when they discover something new. I appreciate how children see things in differently and can open your eyes to new ways of doing things. Most importantly; even at a young age children challenge your ideas. They are forever teaching you.
